Ohio State backup quarterback announces plan to enter transfer portal
Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown will enter the transfer portal once the Buckeyes’ 2024 season comes to a close.
Brown said goodbye to the Buckeyes in a letter shared to social media on Sunday. He did, however, commit to remaining with the team throughout the Playoff run. Ohio State earned the No. 8 seed in the College Football Playoff on Sunday and will host Tennessee in the first round on Dec. 21. Brown has been the primary backup to starter Will Howard throughout the year.
Brown spent 3 seasons in Columbus. He’ll have 2 years of eligibility remaining.
“I am beyond grateful for my time at Ohio State. It has truly been an honor to wear the Scarlet and Gray,” Brown wrote. “I entered this season with the intent of doing everything I could to win a national championship with my brothers, and that goal is still very much alive. I will remain with the team and honor my commitment for the remainder of the season as we pursue our goal of winning it all.”

The 6-foot-3 passer from Draper (Utah) Corner Canyon signed with Ohio State out of the 2022 class. He was the top-ranked recruit from the state of Utah, the sixth-ranked quarterback, and the 43rd-ranked prospect in his class.
Brown competed for the starting job in 2023 but was beaten out by Kyle McCord. When Ohio State added Howard out of the transfer portal prior to the 2024 season, many expected Brown to transfer. Instead, he opted to stick it out in Columbus and once again compete for the job.
“I think people have this thought in their own heads that I will leave and I’m a quitter, but that’s never been me,” Brown said last spring. “These people live wherever, in their mom’s basement, saying stuff about me, and they don’t know s—. Excuse my language, but they don’t know anything. They don’t know who I am. They don’t know who I’ve been. That’s who I’ve always been.”
At the end of the day, though, Brown only has so many years to play. In 2025, Ohio State’s quarterback room will be crowded and attrition was expected.
In addition to Howard, Ohio State coach Ryan Day also added former Alabama signee Julian Sayin out of the transfer portal. Ohio State added 4-star Lincoln Kienholz in the 2023 class, 4-star Air Noland in the 2024 class, and 5-star Tavien St. Clair in the 2025 class.
