Ohio State qualified for the Big Ten Championship Game in most unusual fashion, needing the conference to step in and allow the program to participate in a game that could send the Buckeyes to the College Football Playoff.

An outbreak of COVID-19 within the Michigan program forced Ohio State’s scheduled opponent to cancel their game. With five games played, this was disastrous for Ohio State, who was now a game short of the required six games to qualify for the conference championship.

But the Big Ten stepped in on Wednesday and ruled that Ohio State is eligible and will face Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship Game. Should Ohio State win the championship game, they in all likelihood will qualify for the College Football Playoff.
