The 2020 recruiting class marks the first full cycle for Ryan Day as the head coach at Ohio State. And while there are still six months left until the Early Signing Period, the newly appointed leader has done extraordinarily well so far.

In late June, Ohio State owns the nation’s No. 5 recruiting class, along with the top group in the B1G. The Buckeyes have already landed commitments from five-star receiver Julian Fleming and five-star offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. Overall, OSU has secured 13 pledges.

Not a bad start for a first-time head coach. But sitting in the top five isn’t good enough for four-star safety and IMG Academy product Lejond Cavazos, who committed to the program in April. He has much higher expectations for the 2020 class.

“Like I’ve stated before, we will have the No. 1 class in the nation when it’s all said and done,” Cavazos wrote on Twitter. The tweet was posted shortly after the Buckeyes landed four-star defensive back Clark Phillips — a top 50 player this cycle.

Ohio State is in pretty good company by sitting in the top five. The four programs ahead of the 2020 class for the Buckeyes are Clemson (No. 1), Alabama (No. 2), LSU (No. 3) and Georgia (No. 4). And while three of those classes are certainly capable of being passed — at least at this stage in the cycle — dethroning Clemson from that top spot would be a chore.

Already, the Tigers have locked up five commitments from five-star athletes, four of which are in the top 17. Clemson currently has 18 commits, 10 of which are ranked inside the top 100.

But there’s still a long way to go and plenty of really talented prospects who have yet to give their verbal pledge. With six months until the Early Signing Period a lot can change in the rankings.

Cavazos is confident Ohio State will be at the top when the recruiting period comes to an end.
