Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord will get the start on Saturday as the Buckeyes kickoff the 2023 season.

Head coach Ryan Day made that announcement on Tuesday. McCord beat out Devin Brown during fall camp, although it was a tight competition. Brown is expected to play in Week 1 as well.

“I think that’s significant that we have 2 guys that we feel confident playing in a game,” Day said. “This is something that’s a little uncharted territory for me. But you just go with what you see every day in practice.

“I think that Kyle’s consistency the last couple weeks has allowed him to be the starter. He deserves that. But I also think Devin deserves to play in the game as well. How much? All that, that’s still to-be-determined.”

McCord is entering his 3rd season at Ohio State. He’s played sparingly behind CJ Stroud to this point in his Ohio State career, but he does own a career completion percentage of 70.6%.

Brown is less-experienced. This will be his 2nd season with the Buckeyes and he has yet to throw a pass during his collegiate career.
