Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord will get the start on Saturday as the Buckeyes kickoff the 2023 season.
Head coach Ryan Day made that announcement on Tuesday. McCord beat out Devin Brown during fall camp, although it was a tight competition. Brown is expected to play in Week 1 as well.
“I think that’s significant that we have 2 guys that we feel confident playing in a game,” Day said. “This is something that’s a little uncharted territory for me. But you just go with what you see every day in practice.
“I think that Kyle’s consistency the last couple weeks has allowed him to be the starter. He deserves that. But I also think Devin deserves to play in the game as well. How much? All that, that’s still to-be-determined.”
🗣️ Ryan Day names Kyle McCord as starter for the game Saturday vs. the Hoosiers but both QB's will play.
"Pleased we have two guys confident to play in this game."

McCord is entering his 3rd season at Ohio State. He’s played sparingly behind CJ Stroud to this point in his Ohio State career, but he does own a career completion percentage of 70.6%.
Brown is less-experienced. This will be his 2nd season with the Buckeyes and he has yet to throw a pass during his collegiate career.

Kyle McCord hasn’t “won” anything. He’s been named the starter for the IU game, and Brown will play. Says to me Brown will be given every opportunity to win the job.

Ryan Day said there were times in preseason camp when Kyle McCord pulled ahead and times when Devin Brown pulled ahead in the QB competition.
Day said McCord's consistency in the past 10-14 days allowed him to take the lead and be named the starter for the Indiana game.

This was the right move to Start Kyle McCord. But it is great to hear that Devin Brown will receive playing time on Saturday vs. Indiana to see what he will provide for this team this season and in the up and coming future when he'll take over at QB1 for this organization https://t.co/j4Ume9n1N4

Ryan Day sat down with Kyle McCord and Devin Brown today to tell them that McCord would start on Saturday.
"They both agreed… They both agreed it was fair. They both shared they want to do what is best for the team."
"They were both great. They are excited to play."

Ryan Day says Devin Brown did pull ahead during fall camp at one point, McCord’s consistency as of late moved him back in front

“Devin Brown will also play” .. You know what they say when you have 2 quarterbacks.. https://t.co/ICU2UWMuur

I personally was on the Devin Brown side of the QB battle. However, myself and Buckeye nation as a whole needs to let that go.
Kyle McCord is the starter. We have a loaded roster, with legit national title hopes. Root for McCord. Root for the buckeyes.

Interesting that Ryan Day said Devin Brown also agreed with the decision of Kyle McCord being the starter and also having packages for Brown.
