Ohio State’s football team has paused all team-related activities because of an increase in positive COVID-19 cases. The school announced that it will halt activities for one week within the program.
Athletic director Gene Smith and head team physician Jim Borchers made the decision out of an abundance of caution. No numbers or detailed information were provided by the school regarding the increase in positive tests. It has been the school’s policy to not disclose that information.
The pause in Columbus comes 10 days before the Buckeyes are scheduled to begin spring practice, which is set for March 19.
“Our decisions on the welfare of our student-athletes, staff members and those coming to our campus, and our determination as to when we will reopen and resume activities, will continue to be guided by our medical staff,” Smith said in a statement. “We have been successful in safely hosting nearly 100 athletic events on campus this year with limited disruptions, but this pandemic is not over. We will continue to stress the safety measures of wearing masks, consistent and thorough hand washing and physical distancing and we will remain vigilant in those areas.”
Ohio State’s start date for spring practice has not changed at this time. The Buckeyes are coming off a 7-1 season in 2020.
