Ohio State LB, former 4-star recruit, announces plans to transfer
Ohio State ended the 2024 regular season in disappointing fashion. The team lost in The Game to Michigan and picked up their 2nd loss of the season. The team is still likely to get a berth in the College Football Playoff but 1 Buckeye will not be with the team.
On Monday, linebacker Gabe Powers announced his decision to enter the transfer portal. The LB was originally a 4-star prospect in the 2022 class and starred for Marysville High School in Marysville, OH. Powers committed to the Buckeyes and spent 2 seasons with the team in a reserve role.
The 247Sports Composite ranking had Powers as the No. 8 LB and the No. 5 prospect out of Ohio in 2022. Powers was a big get for the Buckeyes at the time, but the talented prospect was never able to crack OSU’s rotation.
“After much prayer and talking to my family, I have decided it’s in my best interest to enter the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility left,” said Powers.

The Ohio native played in 4 games in 2023 and ended with 7 tackles. In 2024, Powers appeared in 5 games with the Buckeyes. The LB collected 5 tackles and 1 interception in 2024. That 1 INT led to a TD, the lone pick-6 of Powers’ career.
The transfer portal will officially open on Dec. 9 and stay open until Dec. 28. The portal will reopen in April and will also open for 30 days any time a head coach leaves their program.
Because of the loss to Michigan in Week 14, the Buckeyes will be off during conference championship week. The team will now wait to see where they end up in the CFP.
