Ohio State maintains possession after questionable decision overturns takeaway by Penn State
Ohio State has had issues keeping control of the ball in Saturday’s major matchup against Penn State. The Buckeyes originally had another turnover in a crucial fourth-quarter position, but that play did not get upheld.
Looking to hang on and avoid a second loss, the Buckeyes were driving against the Nittany Lions defense when quarterback Will Howard threw a pass to Quinshon Judkins in the flat. The play was immediately blown up by the defense and was ruled a disastrous catch and fumble by Judkins.
Penn State recovered the fumble and was just into Ohio State territory on the return. However, replay quickly buzzed in to review the play for a crucial decision.
The FOX broadcasting team of Joel Klatt and Gus Johnson dissected the play which was hard to decipher at live speed. In the end, officials overturned the call on the field as an incomplete pass, meaning they felt there was enough conclusive evidence to change the original call.
But is it the right call? In plays decided by a split-second, the final decision is always going to be a bit questionable. Here’s how that one looked:

It’s far from the first bit of potential controversy in this one. Officials have been catching heat online throughout the game, and that’s only going to increase after this one.
The decision this time looms large after Ohio State maintained possession, converted on third down and later kicked a field goal to go up, 20-13.
