Ohio State-Penn State: Kirk Herbstreit details expectations for B1G East showdown
One of the biggest showdowns of the B1G season will take place on Saturday night when No. 3 Ohio State travels to face No. 18 Penn State (6:30 p.m. CST/ABC). ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit is highly intrigued by the matchup and offered his thoughts on ESPN’s College Football Playoff show.
Ohio State is coming off a commanding 52-17 home victory against Nebraska. Penn State fell 36-35 in overtime to Indiana on a much-debated touchdown.
Herbstreit is curious about how Penn State will mentally recover from a difficult Week 1.
“I want to see the mindset of Penn State obviously,” Herbstreit said in a quote transcribed by 247Sports. “I mean they played well enough on the field to win the game but self-destructed. The three turnovers, the missed field goals, the mental error at the end of the game and then the controversial call. Normally you get to go back home and have that home crowd. They don’t have that. So where are they mentally?”
Meanwhile, Ohio State looked dominant in Week 1 but Herbstreit says there’s other aspects that can be improved.
“And is Ohio State ready, can they learn from Week 1? We talked about they looked great; they scored 52 points,” Herbstreit said in a quote transcribed by 247Sports. “But there’s obvious areas where they can improve: running the ball and their defensive line. So I just want to see where both these teams are. We’ll learn a lot more about both obviously.”
Ohio State leads the all-time series 20-14 and has won 7 of the last 8 meetings with Penn State.
This should be a hotly contested B1G battle. Ohio State will look to continue on track towards their goal of a national title, while Penn State is aiming to avoid a 0-2 B1G start for the first time since 2010.
