Ohio State receives harsh grade from ESPN for incoming transfer portal haul
Ohio State has been selective in the transfer portal so far this offseason.
On Thursday morning, ESPN released transfer portal grades for every team in its way-too-early top 25. The Buckeyes have just 2 transfer commits so far, which has resulted in a tough grade from ESPN: C.

Ohio State’s incoming transfers so far include quarterback Tristan Gebbia (Oregon State) and safety Ja’Had Carter (Syracuse). Ohio State’s departures also played a role in its mediocre grade.
Here’s some analysis from ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren:
The Buckeyes lost some role and depth players to the portal, but it wasn’t an enormous amount that will impact the two deep. Carter should be able to help the secondary immediately, and the staff added kicker Casey Magyar from Kent State. It’s not great, but not bad either.
Carter was honorable mention All-ACC in 2022 and was a big part of Syracuse’s excellent secondary.
Ohio State is 1 of 4 programs in the top 10 to receive a grade of C or worse. Tennessee and Penn State also received a C while Alabama’s class grades out as a D.
If the Buckeyes are able to add more contributing players via the portal in the spring, their overall transfer portal grade could improve significantly.
