Ohio State is in the market for a new defensive coordinator now that Jim Knowles is headed to Penn State. And Ryan Day has reportedly interviewed one Super Bowl-winning assistant for the post.

According to Matt Zenitz with CBS Sports/247 Sports, Ohio State interviewed longtime New England Patriots assistant Matt Patricia for the DC vacancy in Columbus. Patricia was also briefly the head coach of the Detroit Lions and has held offensive staff positions with the Patriots.

Zenitz reports Patricia was in Columbus on Monday to interview for Ohio State’s DC vacancy. As of now, it’s unclear how that interview went or what direction things are trending.

Patricia’s tenure as an NFL head coach did not go well, posting a 13-29-1 overall record with the Lions before getting fired in the middle of his 3rd season. However, his prowess as an NFL DC under Bill Belichick is well-documented.

From 2012-17, Patricia was the DC as the Patriots appeared in 3 Super Bowls, including 2 victories. He was a part of the legendary Super Bowl LI performance that saw New England escape a 28-3 hole to come back and beat the Atlanta Falcons.

The hire would not be without its risks. Patricia has not been in the college game since 2001-03 when he was an offensive GA for Syracuse.

Then again, Patricia’s former boss, Belichick, is testing his own hand at the college game after becoming the head coach at North Carolina. Maybe Patricia will follow a similar pather to becoming the DC for the Buckeyes.
