Ohio State will wear No. 40 helmet decals to honor former Heisman Trophy winner Howard “Hopalong” Cassady during Saturday’s matchup with Miami (OH). Cassady died Friday morning at age of 85.

“He was an all-time great Buckeye in every way,” athletic director Gene Smith said in a statement released Friday. “We will have the Cassady family in our thoughts and in our prayers.”

The No. 40 is one of seven numbers retired in Ohio State history.

Cassady played offense, defense and special teams on his way to the College Football Hall of Fame. He was a two-time All-American and won the Heisman Trophy in 1955. Cassady was the third Ohio State player to win the most-coveted trophy in sports.

During his career, he recorded 2,466 rushing yards, 4,403 all-purpose yards and 222 points scored. Cassady received induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979.

Ohio State will host Miami (OH) at 3:30 pm ET on Saturday. The Buckeyes are planning to honor Cassady at some point during the game.
