Ohio State University President Michael Drake has denied that there is any truth to a report from Stadium’s Brett McMurphy that described an altercation between ex-assistant coach Zach Smith and a former wide receiver.

Tuesday, McMurphy released the report in which LeBron Grimes, father of former Buckeye Trevon Grimes, said Smith directed a racial slur at his son during an argument. Despite the report, several current players denied that racism was a factor.

Later on Tuesday, Drake issued a statement in response to McMurphy’s story, bashing the reporter for “unfounded” claims.

“The Ohio State University unequivocally and vehemently disputes the unfounded allegations by Brett McMurphy,” the release said. “Any allegations of racism are outrageous and false. The university told McMurphy that we have found no evidence to support these allegations. Reporting in this manner is irresponsible, inflammatory and a severe invasion of privacy of a student athlete and his family as well as a baseless personal attack on Coach Meyer. It is regrettable that McMurphy and his employer would use such poor judgment in running this inaccurate story.”

According to McMurphy’s report, LeBron Grimes claims that head coach Urban Meyer attempted to cover up the incident between Smith and his son.

Ohio State receivers Johnnie Dixon III, Austin Mack and Parris Campbell have all denied the report from McMurphy.
