Ohio State coach Ryan Day says he has been using the bye week to evaluate the entire Buckeyes roster and gave each player three things to improve for the rest of the season.

While the OSU coaching staff members are analyzing what’s going on inside their walls (as they should), we are evaluating what’s happening everywhere else. With six games remaining for the third-ranked, 6-0 Buckeyes, there is a lot of data to sort through.

What are some things for OSU fans to look for in the remaining six games, starting this Friday night at Northwestern in a rematch of last year’s Big Ten Championship Game? What are some numbers which should bring comfort and ones that should be cause for trepidation?

We take a look.

at Northwestern, Friday

Number to give Buckeyes fans confidence: The Wildcats have struggled mightily to move the ball in 2019. Northwestern is 130th — dead last in FBS — in passing efficiency.

Number to makes Buckeyes fans go hmmmmm…: NU is first in the conference in average kickoff returns at 28 yards per return.

vs. Wisconsin, Oct. 26

Number to give Buckeyes fans confidence: The Badgers are 123rd in the nation in net punting and last in the Big Ten at 34.25 yards per kick.

Number to makes Buckeyes fans go hmmmmm…: Almost everything else. Wisconsin leads the nation in seven defensive categories according to official NCAA stats and that does not include shutouts (4).

vs. Maryland, Nov. 9

Number to give Buckeyes fans confidence: The Terrapins are 12th in the B1G and 123rd nationally in red zone offense at 68 percent. Even better, OSU is third in the nation in red zone defense.

Number to makes Buckeyes fans go hmmmmm…: Maryland is ranked 10th in tackles for loss at 8.2 per game, a bit concerning for an OSU line that has struggled at times in pass protection.

at Rutgers, Nov. 16

Number to give Buckeyes fans confidence: Take your choice. The Scarlet Knights are ranked 100th or worse in almost every major category and already saw coach Chris Ash get fired.

Number to makes Buckeyes fans go hmmmmm…: Um, 516? That’s the number of miles between Ohio Stadium and the Rutgers campus. Once OSU gets there, the hard part is over.

vs. Penn State, Nov. 23

Number to give Buckeyes fans confidence: The Buckeyes have not had a lot of explosive plays in the return game but neither have the Nittany Lions, who are 125th in kickoff returns.

Number to makes Buckeyes fans go hmmmmm…: It’s big guys vs. big guys when Penn State’s third-ranked rushing defense meets OSU’s No. 3 rushing offense.

at Michigan, Nov. 30

Number to give Buckeyes fans confidence: 14-1. Forget this year’s stats — OSU has won 14 of the past 15 meetings since 2004 and that number will be in the Wolverines’ heads until they win one.

Number to makes Buckeyes fans go hmmmmm…: As usual, Michigan is sharp in the secondary, allowing the ninth-fewest passing yards in the nation at 160.5 per game.
