Notable events in the timeline are October of 2015, when Courtney Smith told police she felt she was being followed by a man in an SUV. Five days later, she reported to police that she was a victim of “sustained physical abuse.”

The 2015 incident has been at the center of the controversy surrounding Urban Meyer. Zach Smith recently had the police called for trespassing on Courtney Smith’s property (dropping off their children). The July 2018 trespassing incident was reported as an arrest (Smith’s attorney says it was only a citation) led to Smith’s firing. It also led to reporter Brett McMurphy reporting on the 2015 incident. Urban Meyer denied the McMurphy report at Big Ten Media Days, saying nothing happened and he didn’t know how the report was “created.” The comments led McMurphy to do more reporting. On Wednesday he published a follow-up report, including text messages from Courtney Smith to Shelley Meyer about the 2015 incident and abuse. The same day, Courtney Smith told Stadium she believed Urban Meyer knew of Zach Smith’s abuse. Later that day, Ohio State placed Meyer on administrative leave. The school has now hired outside help to investigate.

Zach and Courtney Smith divorced in 2016, but 10TV notes that Courtney Smith continued to complain of Zach Smith’s behavior.

In December 2017, Courtney Smith told police that neighbors informed her Zach Smith was in her yard, “looking in her windows” and “banging on her door.”

Courtney Smith’s filing for a civil protection order notes that she found a webcam, which was on, placed underneath her sofa. 10TV also notes that in a written statement, “Smith claims about a year ago she found Zach standing in her boyfriend’s backyard watching them eat dinner through a sliding glass door.” In the same filing, she accuses Zach Smith of hacking her accounts and remotely accessing her laptop.
