Urban Meyer is 53-4 at Ohio State. Odds are, the three-time national champion is pretty happy in Columbus.

That won’t stop LSU from at least contacting the highly-regarded head coach about its new vacancy, according to a report on FootballScoop on Monday.

LSU fired Les Miles on Sunday after Auburn beat the Tigers and fell to 2-2 on the season.

From the report:

If Orgeron doesn’t earn the job, sources tell FootballScoop that LSU’s committee believes they can and should land a home run.

“Their sights are on national championship caliber, proven head coaches,” a source with knowledge told FootballScoop this morning. During the initial, exploratory phase, we are told to expect LSU, through representatives, to gauge the interest of some of the top coaches in college football, including Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Jimbo Fisher and Tom Herman. Right or wrong, sources tell FootballScoop that LSU believes they will be able to attract a coach of that caliber.

Meyer was formally the head coach at Florida, where he went 65-15, won two SEC crowns and captured a pair of national titles, as well. Despite his success in the SEC, it’s unlikely that the Ohio native would leave Ohio State for another position.

The Buckeyes currently sit at 3-0 under Meyer this season.
