Ryan Day comments on recruitment of Drew Allar out of high school
Ryan Day and Ohio State are gearing up to face Drew Allar as Penn State’s starting quarterback. Allar is in his first year as the starter after coming out of Ohio as a 5-star high school prospect.
During his weekly press conference, Day was asked about Allar and whether or not Ohio State heavily recruited the QB. Allar played his high school career at Medina High School, an area a little over 100 miles northeast of Columbus.
Day admitted Ohio State already had Quinn Ewers committed in the 2022 recruiting class, a player rated as the No. 1 overall recruit in the nation. Ewers eventually reclassified to the 2021 recruiting class, but Day said Allar had already settled on Penn State by that time.
“He’s an Ohio kid who had a great career. We had already had Quinn Ewers committed to us and then there was a reclassification,” said Day. “At that point (Allar) was already committed to Penn State. But a lot of respect for him and his program, and certainly being from the state of Ohio. He’s a good player.”
Allar wrapped up his college career as a 5-star prospect and the No. 4 QB in the country per the 247 Sports Composite. In the end, Ohio State wound up adding Devin Brown in the 2022 recruiting cycle. Brown was rated a 4-star recruit and the No. 6 QB in the country by the composite.
As for the challenges presented by Allar, Day said the QB has done a good job in his first year as a starter and expects great things in his future:
“I think he’s done a good job in his first year. He’s had poise, he’s a big strong QB who leads the team well and manages the game well and then has a good makeup,” Day explained. “I think he’s got a great future ahead of him.”
Regardless of recruitment, Ohio State will need to be on top of its game to account for Penn State’s offense and dynamic rushing attack. Fans looking to get in on the weekend action can use our FanDuel Ohio promo code to get started!
