Ryan Day is under a lot of pressure these days. It’s all good pressure, but it’s high pressure nonetheless.

So, the Ohio State head coach used a bizarre moment during Friday’s press conference to display some humor as the questions were flying in about the Buckeyes’ College Football Playoff semifinal showdown against Texas next Friday night.

This particular question was from a journalist named Jeremiah Smith, which of course is the same name of Day’s freshman wide receiver phenom who has rewritten the Ohio State record book this fall. That Jeremiah Smith has hauled in 70 passes for 1,224 yards and 14 touchdowns, and he has at least 1 more game and possibly 2 if the Buckeyes beat Texas to add to those totals.

Back to the other Jeremiah Smith, who asked Day: “Hey coach, (quarterback) Will (Howard) looked maybe the most comfortable he’s looked all season against Oregon. … How do you really make that count for you?”

Day’s response was short and sweet, with a wry smile to go with it.

“We just keep throwing it to you,” he said, as laughter filled the room.

Naturally, the name connection wasn’t lost on the reporter, who said to Day that he talks to his family every week about the irony.

Jeremiah Smith, the one who is the receiver, and the Buckeyes will square off with the Longhorns next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET in the Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas, with the winner heading to the national title game on Jan. 20 in Atlanta.
