Ryan Day knows he’s entering the time frame where he has traditionally named a starting quarterback during his time at Ohio State. However, he did not wait long during Monday’s press conference to confirm the battle continues into the week ahead.
“We’re looking for someone to emerge… I appreciate their competitiveness. We’re not ready to name a starter right now, so the battle will continue into this week,” said Day about the battle between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown.
As a follow-up, Day was asked if there is a possibility of playing 2 QBs in the season opener against Indiana. He admitted that’s something the coaching staff probably needs to nail down this week and acknowledged playing 2 QBs is not out of the question.
“I think that’s something we have to decide this week,” Day answered. “Are we ready to name someone by the end of the week or does the competition continue into the season? That’s where we’re at and that’s what we’ll do.”
Day provided some of his assessment from the team’s latest scrimmage which was on Saturday. He noted there were positives from both players but still “hot-and-cold” periods throughout.
“Hot and cold, some things that were good” in the movement period. The defense “did a great job” in the 3rd-down period. Some improvements from the offense but still “not where we need to be” while the red zone “was okay,” but not great on either end.
In the end, Day reiterated the program is looking for consistency and believes team ultimately doesn’t need “extraordinary play” from the QB in order to win games:
“The bottom line is there is some good things there and also some plays they would want back. We want consistency there…I keep going back to the fact that we don’t need extraordinary play,” Day explained. “It’s making the routine plays routinely and taking care of the football. Period. I think we have to understand situational football, that’s important, and leading the team down the field.”
