Fields was battling Kentucky transfer Gunnar Hoak for the No. 1 spot on the depth chart. Day had played the quarterback situation close to the vest all during fall camp, saying that there was a serious competition for the job and that neither guy had created much separation.

Fields, a former five-star and Georgia quarterback, is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. Though he didn’t see many snaps while at UGA, he’s already considered to be one of the top additions to the B1G and an early candidate to be the league’s Offensive Player of the Year by season’s end.

Ohio State will open the season on Saturday, Aug. 31 against Florida Atlantic.
