Ryan Day, Ohio State agree to contract extension following national title
Ryan Day has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with Ohio State through the 2031 football season, the school announced on Thursday.
On the heels of a national championship, Day will see 3 years added to his current deal. The extension is still pending approval by the Ohio State University Board of Trustees.
“Ohio State Football has long been defined by excellence and, under Ryan Day’s leadership, that tradition has not only continued but thrived,” said athletic director Ross Bjork in a release. “As a leader, mentor, and coach, Ryan has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the success and well-being of our players, both on and off the field. His leadership has maintained our position of national prominence each year and winning the 2024 national championship validated his program’s culture of excellence, integrity, and perseverance.
“… It is a great pleasure to work side by side with Ryan and we know that his vision and leadership will continue to bring championship success and pride to our program for years to come.”
Ohio State captured its first national championship since 2014 with a 34-23 victory over Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Jan. 20. The win capped a 4-game Playoff run for the Buckeyes that featured beatdowns of ninth-seeded Tennessee and top-seeded Oregon, as well as a 14-point semifinal win over fifth-seeded Texas.
Since Day took over the program in 2019, Ohio State is 67-10 with 2 Big Ten championships, 4 CFP appearances, 2 national championship appearances, and 1 outright title.
Including his 3 games as an interim head coach in 2018, Day owns a 0.875 winning percentage. That ranks third all-time and is the best among active coaches.
