Ryan Day on Jack Sawyer's late TD: 'He just became a legend at Ohio State'
Ryan Day and Ohio State defeated Texas 28-14 on Friday night in the Cotton Bowl to advance to the national championship game.
The game swung on one play that will be remembered in college football lore for generations: Jack Sawyer’s 83-yard scoop-and-score on 4th and goal with just over 2 minutes remaining in the game.
Instead of Texas potentially tying the game in the closing minutes, Sawyer made sure to extend Ohio State’s lead — and effectively send Ohio State to the title game.
After the final seconds ticked off the clock, Day was asked about Sawyer’s big moment by ESPN’s Laura Rutledge.
“I can’t say enough about Jack Sawyer,” Day said. “He’s a guy who loves being a Buckeye. He loves his teammates. He’s done everything that was asked of him to do. He’s a captain, he’s everything that we could possibly ask for in a captain.
“To make a play like that in that moment, we talked before the game about how if you want to leave a legacy behind, become a legend. He just became a legend at Ohio State.”
Sawyer will have at least one more game to play in Scarlet and Gray to add to that legacy. Ohio State will face Notre Dame in the national championship game on Jan. 20 in Atlanta.
