Ryan Day is entering the 2023 season without longtime offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson. He departed to take the head coaching job at Tulsa after 6 seasons in Columbus.

Fortunately, Day remained in his house for the next OC, promoting wide receivers coach Brian Hartline to the role. While it remains to be seen if Day will relinquish playcalling, he praised Hartline for the offseason adjustment to a new role.

“Well when Kevin left, we kind of kept everything the way it was, Brian just now has a different role in that room. Brian’s very talented in terms of not only what he knows but also connecting with players. When you become a coordinator, it’s all different,” said Day in an interview with the Big Ten Network.

“I think everybody thinks it’s calling plays, you just dial it up on a sheet. It’s all about the organization, the day-to-day, the scripts, the watching film, making sure everything is in order and then it comes down to the game planning and how well we can put it on the field. Those are all things he’s working through for the first time.”

Hartline returned to the Buckeyes in 2017 after concluding his NFL career. He has shined as the WRs coach for Ohio State since taking that post in 2018, and now Hartline gets the chance to keep growing in a new role.
