Ryan Day knows Ohio State is No. 1 in the first CFP rankings of the season. However, that’s not the goal the Buckeyes set for themselves when they set out this season.

During Day’s Wednesday night lighting round with the media, the head coach said the ranking only means Ohio State “had a good start” to the 2023 season. As for the goals at Ohio State, the first goal was to win the season opener, and then win the next 10 before focusing on increased stakes at the end of the season.

“Zero. No, it means we’ve had a good start. Our first goal was to win the first game, our next was to win the next 10 and then we have a few after that,” Day said. “None of those goals have been met, other than winning the first game. We’ve got a lot of football ahead of us. We’ve just got to go to work. We’ll look up at the end of the year, our goal is to be the No. 1 team at the end of the season.”

If the Buckeyes want to be that No. 1 team hoisting the national championship at the end of the season, there are some areas to work on. Ohio State’s defense is an elite unit through the first 8 games of the season but the offense is still working to find its stride down the stretch.
