Ryan Day says 'everything will be looked at' after Cotton Bowl failure
Ryan Day was already facing increased pressure heading into 2024. That pressure was ratcheted up another couple of levels after the Cotton Bowl disaster.
Friday night, Ohio State juggled opt-outs, injuries and inefficiencies while falling to Missouri by a final score of 14-3. Despite another lights-out defensive effort, the Buckeye offense produced the worst performance of the Day era in the loss.
After the game, Day was asked how he would evaluate the quarterback position heading into the offseason. Kyle McCord is now at Syracuse, and Devin Brown was injured early on. Lincoln Kienholz struggled as he finished the game, and the Buckeyes did not get the extended look at Brown they were hoping for.
Day admitted he still needs to process things after the game and said “everything” with the Buckeyes will be looked at. That includes “a hard look” at the QB room.
“Just fresh off the game, so it’s hard for me to process all of it right now. We’ve got to figure out what’s best for the team moving forward, and that’s in a lot of areas,” said Day. “We’ve got to take a hard look at that and get that figured out, but everything will be looked at.”
Earlier in his press conference, Day admitted this year’s performance was simply not good enough for Ohio State. Moving forward, he wants to find the guys who have “unfinished business” to return to Columbus and finish things out the right way.
“Yeah, we wanted to finish this game and build momentum into next year. It didn’t happen, but yeah,” Day explained. “First thing I mentioned in the room is the guys who are deciding whether to come back or not, now they’ve got to rally together and we’ve got to put this team together moving forward of guys who are coming back to finish some unfinished business that happened here, and I know there are some guys who feel that way.”
