Ryan Day knows Ohio State did not fulfill every goal that the program has in a season. However, the head coach is adamant the main goal of the Buckeyes is still alive in the 12-team College Football Playoff.

“We’re definitely embracing (the new CFP). All of our focus is on this game, and as you know, our goal is to win a national championship, and the goal all along was to make the Playoff,” said Ryan Day in a Sunday afternoon sit down with WBNS 10TV. “Well, we’re here, and we’ve won 10 games this year, we had 2 top-5 wins.”

While Day is technically correct, those comments generated some buzz on social media. The head coach regularly lists beating Michigan, winning the Big Ten, and winning the national title as the only 3 goals for the Buckeyes on an annual basis.

Even after landing in the Playoff bracket, Ohio State is in its 4th straight year without fulfilling 2 of those 3 goals after another loss to Michigan. And Day followed up his initial comments by pointing toward an evolving B1G and a toll of injuries the program dealt with throughout the season.

Again, technically a true reality, but one that will fall on mostly deaf ears on both sides of The Game. Ohio State fans know the Buckeyes were supposed to win big this year, and Michigan is not interested in any injury woes after playing without Will Johnson and Colston Loveland this season.

“Along, the way there have been different challenges. This year, the Big Ten changed, we had 3 top-5 games this year, and we took on some injuries. So along the way this year, there have been twists and turns,” Day explained. “Some things that went well, some things that obviously we’d like to have back, but you’ve got to learn from those, you’ve got to make adjustments.”

Now, the only goal left to play for is the national title, but winning it all would certainly calm some nerves and provide a major punctuation mark for Day’s tenure. It will be up to Ohio State to address its issues before Saturday’s game against Tennessee rolls around.

“Every team in this Playoff right now is going to have issues, and it’s the team that can address those issues that is going to give itself the best chance to win,” predicted Day. “We’re excited about being in this game, we know that this has been the goal all along was to get in the Playoff and to make a run at this thing.”
