Ryan Day is unaware of some of the outside noise on his team, including chatter surrounding star wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. However, the head coach is not backing down from a belief that Harrison deserves to be in the mix for some of the top honors in the country.

Speaking with the media after Wednesday’s practice, Day addressed the idea that there’s a better player in the country. He said he would “like to know who he is” if there is someone better than Harrison and said the WR ultimately deserves to be in the Heisman mix for the way he works and produces.

“I don’t know what he’s getting for attention. I don’t know because every minute we have we’re trying to grind, we’re trying to work. I just know what I’ve seen, if there’s a better player in the country — certainly a receiver in the country — I’d like to know who he is,” said Day. “There’s an argument out there, everybody wants to defend their guys, but I don’t sit there and usually brag on our players. But you see the guy, put in the work he has and produce the way that he has, he deserves to be in the mix for Heisman. I just believe that. I’m sure people would argue with that, but pretty hard to argue with what he’s put on the field so far this year.”

Heading into Week 9, Harrison is No. 7 in the national Heisman odds. However, Day noted awards aren’t given out at this point in this season, so there’s still time for Harrison to make his case.

“They don’t give out awards in Week 7 or 8. They give them out at the end of the year. A lot of work to be done, but I know he should be in consideration,” Day explained.
