Ryan Day shares preview of Notre Dame, being at OSU for 'these kind of games'
Ryan Day has Ohio State humming once again, improving to 3-0 with a high-flying win over Western Kentucky in Week 3. Now, the Buckeyes turn to their stiffest test yet in a massive road matchup against Notre Dame.
The Week 4 game will be a top-10 affair in primetime, and Day had no bulletin board material to offer the matchup. At his weekly press conference, the head coach of the Buckeyes expects the game to come down to the line of scrimmage and the fourth quarter.
“We gotta have a great week of practice. It’s going to come down to winning the line of scrimmage for sure. It’s going to come down to the fourth quarter and who’s going to be there in the end? They have a really good team, Marcus (Freeman) does a great job, they have a great staff, so we gotta go win a top-10 game on the road,” said Day. “Our guys are really excited for this game. You could see it Sunday, you could see it even yesterday, guys buzzing around. Now we’ve gotta have a great week of practice and it’s gonna come down to who wants to compete more.”
Following the Week 3 win, Day said he was proud of how his team ratcheted up the intensity. Asked if his team can do it again, Day said it’s simply a necessity at this point but noted these are the type of moments players and coaches come to Ohio State for.
“It’s what we have to do. Top-10 game on the road, these are the kinds of games why you come to Ohio State,” Day explained. “It’s an exciting series because it’s not something that happens very often, Ohio State vs. Notre Dame. Two of the bigger teams in the Midwest getting together for a home-and-home… Our guys are really fired up for this.”
Ohio State won the matchup against the Fighting Irish last season, but that game came in Columbus and was during Week 1. We’ll see if playing in Notre Dame Stadium with both teams clicking makes a difference.
