Ryan Day and Ohio State are riding high after a blowout of Purdue in Week 11. However, questions of the quarterback depth chart emerged after the usage late in that game.

Devin Brown, the traditional backup, saw the field but received less snaps in favor of true freshman Julian Sayin. Day was asked about that decision during his Tuesday press conference, and the head coach said the staff felt it was a chance to get Sayin some in-game reps throwing the football.

“We want to get those guys as many reps as we can, we’d like to get both of those guys reps,” said Day about Brown and Sayin. “In that moment, I felt like it was a 3rd down and wanted to get Julian that opportunity to take a 3rd down. I felt like he used it as an opportunity to scramble and make a play.

“We wanted to throw the ball a little bit with Julian to see how he did because he hasn’t really done that a bunch in games. Just missed one and he and Brandon didn’t connect, we’d like to see him get a first down there. But that was a great opportunity for him. I’d love to continue to be able to do that, but as you go on, you’re going to get less opportunities.”

While the opportunities are important, Day confirmed the veteran Brown is still the primary backup to Will Howard:

“He and Devin are both working hard in practice. Devin right now is our backup, but Julian’s pushing hard,” Day reaffirmed.
