Ryan Day went with Kyle McCord as the starting quarterback in the season opener, and Day confirmed earlier in the week McCord will get the start again in Week 2. Along with that, Day is hoping to get Devin Brown in the game more this weekend.

Following Thursday’s radio show, Day held a rapid-fire Q&A with media via Zoom. He was asked about the QB room and how things stack up behind McCord and Brown.

Day admitted veteran QB and Oregon State transfer Tristan Gebbia is the current player the program would turn to as QB3 on the depth chart. However, that hasn’t changed the outlook for 4-star freshman Lincoln Kienholz.

“Tristan would be the next one in the game, Tristan has done a great job helping the other guys in the room. He’s like having a graduate assistant,” said Day. “He’s very, very smart, very mature and has talent. So he would be the next one in.”

As for Kienholz, Day said the Buckeyes would love to get the freshman into a game at some point, but there’s a lot to go into that. However, Kienholz is learning quickly at the collegiate level.

“We’d love at some point to get Lincoln in a game to get his feet wet. We’re allowed to have 4 games so could still redshirt Lincoln. We’ll see how things go. Every rep is so valuable right now, so we’ll see, but there’s a lot of things we are very much encouraged with in Lincoln,” Day explained. “We see someone who hasn’t played a whole bunch of football. Has played multiple sports, but has a great feel, is very intelligent is very inquisitive, is very curious and has to continue to build… It’s gonna take a little bit of time for him but he’s learning quickly.”
