Ohio State and Georgia rang in the 2023 New Year with an epic finish in the Peach Bowl. Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, that ending produced a disastrous and heartbreaking finish with Ryan Day’s squad missing out on the national championship game.

Getting the ball back with less than a minute remaining, CJ Stroud guided the offense down the field and into field goal range. That put Noah Ruggles in position to try a 50-yard field goal with 8 seconds left on the clock.

Remarkably, Ruggles stepped up for that kick as the final moments of 2022 ticked away in New York City. By now, everyone knows Ruggles’ kick was wide left, but it was wide left and landed no good just as the clock hit zero to welcome the start of 2023.

Here is how the ball drop and both team’s radio calls went down in synchronized fashion:

In the video, Ruggles’ field goal try started in 2022 and landed in 2023 but that does not quite account for the real-time events. As real-time went, his kicked landed with a few seconds left on the countdown clock, but, with TV delay, the kick landed in 2023.
