Just about everyone associated with college football has given Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa the Heisman Trophy. Through the first half of the season, it’s been really difficult to argue with that stance.

One analyst believes there’s another candidate who should be in the conversation. Actually, he thinks Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins should be the frontrunner.

Brady Quinn joined the 247Sports College Football Podcast and talked about the Heisman Trophy race between Tagovailoa and Haskins. The former Notre Dame gunslinger is actually giving the edge to Haskins through the first half of the season.

“I said it on national television and there’s a lot of pushback from a lot of Alabama fans,” Quinn said. “Look, I think Dwayne Haskins is the leader in the clubhouse for the Heisman. Tua might be 1-B if Dwayne is 1-A. Here’s the thing I’d say. If we’re all about making a resume or making a case for a player. You can probably make a better case for the criteria that usually leads to the Heisman Trophy right now. Usually, it’s stat-based. We know that. But that’s secondary to your team being in contention for the College Football Playoff. If I’m not mistaken, both Ohio State and Alabama are in contention for the playoff, are they not? So if they are, then we go to the stats.”

Through the first six weeks of the season, Haskins has thrown for 1,919 yards and 25 touchdowns as the Buckeyes have posted a perfect 6-0 record. Tagovailoa has 1,495 yards and 18 touchdowns with no interceptions. The Crimson Tide are also 6-0.

But Ohio State has played a few more challengers than Alabama, which is the difference for Quinn. The Buckeyes have posted wins over a top 10 Penn State team and a previously-ranked TCU squad.

“By the way, he’s probably going to get to half a hundred this year based on their schedule and what they have the rest of the way. I think you can make a case for him right now. I’m not saying that isn’t going to change once Tua is challenged or once they play tougher opponents like Auburn, like LSU down the stretch.”

If you had to choose one quarterback, it’s really hard to go wrong. Both Tagovailoa and Haskins have been sensational in the first half of the season.

The race should get even more interesting down the home stretch.
