Tommy Eichenberg snubbed: Fans react to LBs omission from list of finalists for Butkus Award
Tommy Eichenberg has been a monster for Ohio State’s defense all season long. Unfortunately, Eichenberg will not receive the honor of being a finalist for the award going to the nation’s top linebacker.
When the 5 finalists were announced Tuesday, Eichenberg’s name was omitted. Iowa’s Jack Campbell was the lone player out of the B1G to make the list.
While Campbell would likely be a worthy recipient, the inclusion of certain other linebackers is notable. After all, Eichenberg leads the Buckeyes with 105 total tackles, nearly 40 more than the next closest player on Ohio State’s roster this season.
Eichenberg also leads Ohio State with 12 TFL and has included 2.5 sacks and a pick-6 to his credit. In 11 games played this season, Eichenberg has 13+ tackles 4 times and 8+ tackles 7 times.
Eichenberg will probably not lose any sleep over the omission, but a number of fans and media members weighed in on the major snub:
1. I think the Butkus Award finalists list is hurt by not including Ohio State LB Tommy Eichenberg, who has been immense.
2. Butkus Award finalist and UGA LB Jamon Dumas-Johnson: 54 tackles, three sacks.
3. Eichenberg: 105 tackles, 2.5 sacks, an INT, a TD

Tommy eichenberg got absolutely robbed by the butkus award voters. Absolute crying shame that one of the most qualified LBs in the nation won’t be a finalist https://t.co/wFWG4Swyqw

Dumas-Johnson is a good player but this is how his stats compare to Tommy Eichenberg who was just left off the list…
Dumas-Johnson:
54 tackles (37 solo), 7 TFL, 3 sacksEichenberg:
105 tackles (67 solo), 12 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 1 pick-six@thedickbutkus should be outraged pic.twitter.com/JChB836q93— Dylan Deibel (@DylanDeibel) November 22, 2022
Tommy Eichenberg not being a Butkus Awards finalist is an atrocious look in to the reality of award voting.
That being said he won’t need an award to say he’s the best linebacker if he plays like he has all season these next few weeks.

Tommy Eichenberg and Jackson Mitchell being off this list is absurd. https://t.co/Hz01xPvkdf

Jack Campbell deserves the award but Tommy Eichenberg absolutely deserved a seat at the table. The guy has been incredible https://t.co/6SDqBpVSnw
