Ruggles played in just one game for the Tar Heels in 2020. Despite playing a big role in 2019, he lost his job to Grayson Atkins and decided to transfer out of the program upon graduation.

In 2019, Ruggles converted on 19-of-27 field goal attempts and was perfect on his 45 extra point tries. He knocked down 16-of-18 field goals from inside 40 yards. He had a season-long of 49 yards and drilled a game-winning kick to beat rival Duke.

Ruggles did not attempt a field goal in 2018 or 2020. He made his lone PAT try in 2020 against Western Carolina and converted both extra point attempts against the same opponent in 2018.
