Urban Meyer hails Ohio State win over Penn State as one of the 'most impressive' in Ryan Day era
Urban Meyer has won at the highest levels, in the biggest moments, and he’s done it at Ohio State, leading the Buckeyes to the national championship in 2014.
Now a college football analyst with the FOX Big Noon Kickoff crew, Meyer was on hand Saturday to see the program he used to lead pull off as impressive a road win as you could dream up. The 4th-ranked Buckeyes stormed into Happy Valley and took down 3rd-ranked Penn State, which was previously undefeated, in front of a Beaver Stadium record crowd that had its heart set on finally seeing the Nittany Lions beat Ohio State after 7 straight losses to their Big Ten rival.
Well, it didn’t happen. The Buckeyes defense stiffened deep in its own territory at both the end of the 1st half and near the end of the game, keeping the Nittany Lions off the scoreboard both times in a thrilling 20-13 victory that kept Ohio State squarely in the middle of the College Football Playoff conversation. A decade after Meyer led the Buckeyes to that national title in the 1st year of the Playoff, his successor, Ryan Day, is in a position to do the same thing in the 1st year of the expanded Playoff format.
And Meyer believes Saturday was a huge stepping stone for Day, calling it one of the “most impressive” wins in the Day era.
“Their toughness was there. The offensive line, to me, won this football game,” said Meyer, alluding to Ohio State’s ability to run out the clock after that goal-line stand in the 4th quarter. “The offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage for 60 minutes.”

Day’s team improved to 7-1 with the titanic win and will head home to face Purdue as it tries to run the table after its only loss of the season to No. 1 Oregon.
