Urban Meyer issues statement in response to rumors of coaching return at Ohio State
Urban Meyer maintains that he has no interest in coaching again.
On Thursday, Meyer decided to address rumors that he would return to Ohio State to replace Ryan Day, his successor and former offensive coordinator. Meyer issued a statement via his podcast, The Triple Option.
“It has come to my attention that there are reports speculating my return to the sidelines in Columbus,” Meyer’s statement opens. “While I thoroughly enjoyed my 7 seasons as head coach at The Ohio State University, I have no interest in coaching again. I will always be a Buckeye and have full confidence in Ryan Day, his staff, and every player that puts on the Scarlet and Gray.”
Day is feeling the heat in Columbus after Ohio State’s loss to Michigan, its fourth consecutive in The Game. Meyer was famously 7-0 against the Wolverines during his OSU tenure.
Day has a 66-10 overall record and 46-5 record in Big Ten competition. The only other B1G team that Ohio State has lost to under Day is Oregon. Due to The Game’s 2020 cancelation for COVID-related Michigan availability issues, Day has not guided the Buckeyes to a win over the Wolverines since 2019.
Ohio State AD Ross Bjork recently voiced support for Day, but that didn’t stop some fans for calling for Meyer’s return. A 3-time national champion at Florida (2) and Ohio State (1), Meyer last coached in college in 2018 at OSU and last coached professionally in 2021 with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Meyer is a college football analyst for FOX.
