Ohio State’s trend of arrogance continues.

It wasn’t enough that Ohio State University was looking to trademark “The” for merchandise — you know, the most popular word in the English language — but now, licensing is extending to birthday cakes. That’s right, if you want a Buckeye-themed cake to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or any other special occasion, you’re going to have to go through the school.

Seriously.

According to a report from the Columbus Dispatch, commercial bakers are not permitted to use Ohio State images on their cakes, pastries and other items without paying a licensing fee. Yes, even though the treats will eventually be eaten.

“As for a custom Buckeye cake, I won’t touch it,” said Frank Resch of Resch’s Bakery. “I won’t because it’s a $10,000 fine.”

Pretty steep for a Block “O” on a birthday cake. But, when you have the chance to make a little extra money, why not, I guess.

Bakers from around the area reportedly tend to stay away from anything closely related to Ohio State logos, mascots, phrases, etc.  because it’s so difficult to know what is legal and what’s not. And that makes sense, better safe than sorry.

So, for any young one out there hoping to celebrate a birthday by having his favorite team included on his cake, too bad. You’re going to have to pay for it. And it doesn’t sound like it comes at a very cheap price.
