WATCH: Urban Meyer addresses decision to fire assistant coach Zach Smith
Urban Meyer understood that he was going to have to answer some tough questions regarding recently terminated assistant coach Zach Smith at B1G Media Days on Tuesday. While at the podium in Chicago, the Ohio State head coach provided some reasoning behind his decision to fire his longtime assistant.
The focus shifted from football to the situation involving Smith yesterday, when it was reported that the assistant was allegedly involved in two separate domestic violence incidents. Monday night, Meyer decided to part ways with Smith.
Meyer didn’t provide many details on the situation and refused to go into specific details about Smith and the decision to terminate the assistant coach, but he did give a few answers on Tuesday.
Here’s what the Buckeyes’ head coach had to say on the situation:
Urban Meyer’s comments about Zach Smith’s dismissal.
He said what was reported in 2009 about an alleged domestic violence incident “wasn’t actually what happened” and a 2015 alleged incident does not exist.

Meyer said it was in the best interest of his team to move on from Smith and didn’t want to go into detail behind the decision.
Meyer did not confirm whether he’s appointed anyone to the vacant position on his staff at this time.
