Talk about an awkward end to an interview.

On Tuesday, various members of the Washington State coaching staff spoke with reporters about the upcoming Holiday Bowl contest against Michigan State. Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch was one of the coaches who met with the media to talk about Thursday’s matchup. And for most of the six-minute interview, things were going quite well.

But on the last question for Grinch, things took a bit of an awkward turn.

Grinch is reportedly headed to Ohio State at the end of the season to become the 10th assistant coach on the Buckeyes’ staff. There’s been no official word on the subject, but it’s been speculated for the past week. So, when reporters asked Grinch about whether or not he’d be in Pullman in 2018, he backed up and walked away from the microphones.

That was just the GIF version of Grinch’s response. Below is the full six-minute interview with the very strange ending.

For Washington State, it’s probably not a great sign that he backed away and ended the interview so abruptly. That likely means Grinch is headed back to Ohio — his home state — to continue his coaching career.

Don’t be surprised if some official announcement surfaces in the next few days.
