Two things really define Urban Meyer’s career at Ohio State: going 7-0 against Michigan and the incredible postseason run at the end of the 2014 season to win a national championship.

Ohio State claimed a national title in Meyer’s third season in Columbus, the inaugural year for the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes crushed Wisconsin in the B1G Championship Game to earn a bid into the four-team field. OSU then defeated Alabama and Oregon to add another championship to the trophy case.

As you might expect, though, Meyer wasn’t always confident on the sidelines during that incredible run. In fact, he thought his team might have to be invincible offensively to beat Oregon in the championship game.

During B1G Media Days, Rutgers head coach Chris Ash — who was the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach that year at Ohio State — recalled a funny moment on the headset early in the game.

“I remember us sitting in the press box on the sideline, the first drive of the game Oregon went down the field and scored on us,” Ash recalled. “I remember Urban getting on the headset and telling Tom Herman ‘We’re going to have to score 100.'”

That’s not exactly something you want to hear as a defensive coordinator. But Ash remembers he and fellow co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell remained pretty calm during the situation.

“I remember Luke Fickell and I being on the headsets and talking to each other like ‘Hey, we’re fine. Let’s just get our players settled down, our plan’s going to work,'” Ash said.

Ohio State did get everything figured out defensively. The Buckeyes shut down the Ducks and Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota, going on to post a 42-20 victory. That win secured Meyer’s legacy as one of the greats in Ohio State history.

But, even to this day, Ash says that comment from Meyer is still something he laughs about.

“(Luke and I) laugh, still to this day about Urban saying ‘We gotta score 100.'”
