Xavier Johnson was motivated following scholarship before 2021 Oregon game: ‘If anything it made me hungrier’

Xavier Johnson got a scholarship just before the Oregon game last season. Since then, he has been feeling extra motivated per Griffin Strom of Eleven Warriors.
Johnson stated that he really wasn’t thinking about the fact that he had just earned a scholarship at Ohio State, he was just trying to focus on winning the game. The Buckeyes came up short and lost that game 35-28.
“I am on scholarship. I got put on scholarship against Oregon last year,” Johnson said after practice Wednesday. “But it was one of those things where my main focus was going out and keeping the focus on the game. So it wasn’t a big parade. It wasn’t one of those big things where the team huddles up and there’s a big celebration. My main focus was going to get that win. We came up a little short, but just wanted to keep everything on the team.”
The expectations that Johnson has from his coaches has fueled him now that he’s on scholarship. Johnson is in his 5th season at WR for the Buckeyes and is even more motivated than before. He knows he has to be better moving forward.
“If anything, it made me hungrier,” Johnson said. “It kind of put me in a position where I am getting some playing time or opportunity for some playing time this year. And just with that knowledge and that expectation, it just has kind of made me more hungry.”
