Zach Smith believes Urban Meyer will coach at USC
The Urban Meyer-to-USC speculation started when the former Ohio State head coach decided to step down from his coast in Columbus. And now, one of his longtime assistant coaches is weighing in on the matter.
On a recent episode of his Menace 2 Society podcast, Zach Smith talked about the potential for Meyer to return to the college football sidelines. Most notably, the former receivers coach talked about the USC speculation.
Smith believes Meyer will coach at USC sometime in the near future and points to some evidence that it’s more than just a rumor.

“How about this — I’m from Dublin, Ohio and know hundreds of people, like everyone would who grew up somewhere. Coincidentally, that’s where Urban lives,” Smith said. “I probably know someone who either cuts your grass, works with the guy who cuts your grass or I know someone that is around you.
“Someone that I know that works in the United States Postal Service dropped a bomb on me last week. He tells me that Urban Meyer’s house has had certified mail sent to and from the University of Southern California. I’m talking several letters. I don’t know that he has communicated with them, and it’s a decent source, I would put $1000 that he would be the head coach at USC in the near future.”
With Clay Helton’s future as the head coach in jeopardy, there have been rumblings that USC might be a good fit for Meyer. But it would contradict what Meyer said at his retirement press conference, saying “I believe I am done coaching” in December.
This fall, Meyer will serve as an analyst on FOX’s college football pregame show, along with former USC stars Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart. Earlier this spring, Bush said he would “recruit” Meyer to take over the program if things go awry for Helton and the Trojans this year.
It sounds like there’s a little more to the Meyer-to-USC chatter than just speculation.
