While Penn State has had a relatively good weekend in recruiting over the last two days, the Nittany Lions did lose a major commitment on Saturday.

Four-star linebacker Derek Wingo flipped his commitment this weekend, decommitting from Penn State and giving his verbal pledge to Florida. He originally announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions on Christmas Day 2018, but had a change of heart six months later.

On Saturday, Wingo made his announcement via Twitter.

Wingo was one of the top commitments in Penn State’s class and was considered a steal for James Franklin and company. The native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida originally bypassed several in-state and SEC offers to join the Lions.

According to 247Sports, Wingo is listed as the No. 11 linebacker in the 2020 class and is ranked No. 165 overall this cycle. He’s also a top 25 prospect out of Florida.

It’s a big loss for the Nittany Lions, but they were able to counter his departure with a big weekend on the recruiting front. Penn State has added four new members to its 2020 class and has bumped up three spots in the rankings from No. 20 to No. 17.

Penn State currently owns the B1G’s second-best recruiting class.
