Abdul Carter has had an incredible season for Penn State, winning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and helping the Nittany Lions reach the conference title game on Saturday night against Oregon.

He had 54 total tackles, 33 of them solo, 10 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. The junior defensive end was a major reason why, win or lose on Saturday night in Indianapolis, Penn State appears headed for a College Football Playoff spot on Selection Sunday.

But then Carter made the decision to put a message on his eye black for the game against the high-octane Ducks. It read: “BIG 10 BULLY” in all capital letters. And that left Carter wide open to some criticism as Oregon piled up 31 points on Penn State during a dizzying first half.

Keep in mind that the Nittany Lions hadn’t given up 31 points all season — for an entire game. The highest points total the Penn State defense allowed was 30 in a 33-30 overtime victory at USC on Oct. 12. So, allowing 31 in 1 half of football, even against possibly the best offense in college football, was pretty staggering for a defense like the Nittany Lions’ and pretty, well, awkward for a player calling his team a “bully” for all the nation to see.

Because of that, fans had their way with Carter long before the first half even ended:
