Mike Gesicki has been heralded as one of the top tight ends in college football this season. He’s unbelievably athletic for his size and stature and has been a proven threat in Penn State’s passing attack the past two seasons.

While all of that has been beneficial for the Nittany Lions, there are some things the athletic tight end could improve on, at least that’s what Big Ten Network analyst Matt Millen believes.

During Penn State’s matchup against Rutgers on Saturday, Millen had some harsh criticism for Gesicki, saying he needs to improve as a blocker on the field. But it wasn’t put quite as kindly as that.

“It’s embarrassing,” Millen said on Saturday. “I don’t want to dog the guy. At the next level, it’s got to be better than that. It’s got to get better at this level.”

Gesicki has earned most of his fame as a pass-catcher more so than for his ability to block defenders. And why Millen’s criticism might be accurate, calling the tight end’s blocking ability “embarrassing” might be a bit of a stretch.

In 10 games this season, Gesicki has caught 42 passes for 419 yards and five touchdowns. He ranks second in reception yards among B1G tight ends, behind only Wisconsin’s Troy Fumagalli.

But it’s not all about catches and touchdowns at that position. Millen does have a point when he says Gesicki’s blocking probably could use some improvement.

Labeling it as an embarrassment might be a bit far, though.
