Drew Allar added to elite watchlist after dynamic start to 2023
Drew Allard has not buckled under the expectations that come with being a former 5-star quarterback. In fact, he has thrived as Penn State’s starting QB to open the 2023 season.
Allar announced his arrival with an early touchdown in the season opener and has not looked back. Most recently, he engineered a 31-0 win over Iowa with 4 touchdown passes during a methodical attack against the Hawkeyes.
Overall, Allar has completed 67.2% of his passes for 903 yards and 8 passing touchdowns to start the season. He has been mobile enough to impact the offense with his legs and has 74 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
As a result, Allar has been named to the Davey O’Brien Award watchlist. The award is the oldest and most prestigious QB award in the country and is given annually to a standout QB.

In the end, it is hard to see Allar carving out a path to win the Davey O’Brien Award with a host of talented QBs around the country. Caleb Williams, Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix are just a few of the early-season players to shine.
Still, Allar’s inclusion on the updated watchlist speaks volumes to his early success. Now, he can try and build on that foundation moving forward.
