Drew Allar hit the field Saturday night in his first start for Penn State.

Head coach James Franklin kept the decision on the starting quarterback under wraps all training camp, waiting until the starting lineups were announced to reveal Allar as QB1. In the end, the job was always Allar’s to lose, and the former 5-star prospect has shined at times in the first half.

Right out of the gate, Allar showed what he could do with his blend of mobility and elite arm strength. On the first drive of the game, Allar deftly avoided pressure and stepped up in the pocket before delivering a beautiful strike on the move. It went for a 72-yard touchdown.

Allar began the game by going 11-for-12 through the air before cooling off slightly. In the end, he was 13-for-18 for 214 yards and a touchdown, but even some of his misses were noteworthy.

On one 3rd-down play, Allar delivered a pretty ball to the sideline with pressure closing in, but his receiver could not control the ball with a foot inbounds. He did bounce back from that drive, leading a 2-minute drill to get the Nittany Lions in position for a field goal before the half. Unfortunately, Penn State kicker Sander Sahaydak was 0-for-2 on field goal tries.

Either way, Allar is showing what he can do, and there are plenty of reasons to be excited for the QB. Here’s how social media reacted to the QB:
