ESPN previewed spring practice for every Big Ten program on Wednesday.

That includes Penn State, who is hoping to contend for the Big Ten in 2023. ESPN analysts picked a “newcomer to watch” for the Nittany Lions ahead of spring camp.

Their pick is incoming freshman running back London Montgomery. Penn State returns multiple productive running backs from its 2022 offense, but Montgomery could be talented enough to make an early impact.

Here’s some analysis from ESPN’s Blake Baumgartner:

Incoming freshman London Montgomery (No. 233 overall) is the third ESPN 300 running back to sign with Penn State in the past two cycles. If Singleton or Allen gets hurt, Montgomery could provide some much-needed insurance.

Montgomery is from Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was a 4-star prospect in the class of 2023. He ranked as the No. 28 running back in the country, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen are expected to earn most of the carries early on, but Montgomery could be in position to carve out a role as a true freshman.

Penn State’s spring game is scheduled for April 15.
