ESPN's FPI bumps Penn State into top 4 following Week 4 shutout
ESPN’s FPI continues to push Penn State up the rankings system following a Week 4 shutout of Iowa.
Coming out of a 4-0 start to the season, the FPI has bumped the Nittany Lions 2 more spots on the latest rankings. That puts Penn State ahead of Georgia, Texas, Oregon and USC into the No. 4 spot on the system.
Ohio State continues to lead the FPI but the Nittany Lions only trail the Buckeyes, Oklahoma and Alabama after Week 4. Penn State is also given a 14.3% chance of winning out though massive showdowns against Michigan and Ohio State remain on the schedule.
As for the College Football Playoff outlook, Penn State is up to a 34% chance to reach the final four. Those are the 5th-best odds in the entire country after a 4-0 start for the program.
The goal is always to win every game you play, but the Nittany Lions are carving out a strong start and a case to be one of the 4 best teams in the country. Every goal is still in front of James Franklin’s squad, and it’s worth noting Penn State could potentially play itself into the CFP even if the team drops a game during the season.
For now, Penn State will shift its “1-0” focus to a road trip against Northwestern to finish September. If the Nittany Lions get out of the month with a 5-0 record, an Oct. 14 road trip to Columbus would loom large.
