Greg McElroy is a bit concerned about Penn State coming out of Week 9. That’s understandable considering the Nittany Lions struggled to get stops and pull away from an overmatched Indiana team on Saturday.

In McElroy’s recap of the action, he pointed to the nail-biting win and said he believes the program is “really average” as things currently stand.

“Nail-biter. Now, I’ve been kind of been outspoken about the fact that I think Penn State’s really average right now. I think they have a high ceiling and I think they have good talent, but there’s just something missing,” McElroy claimed. “They don’t have the horsepower offensively that you want to have. What I did think though is they have an elite defense and they did not have their best stuff obviously against Indiana.”

Moving forward, McElroy said he would probably have even less confidence in Penn State and James Franklin if he were a fan of the program. The Nittany Lions will face Maryland in Week 10 before gearing up to face Michigan in Week 11.

“I might have less confidence in them being competitive down the stretch against the toppest, against the highest, tiers of college football as they move forward. A bit of an eye-opener,” said McElroy about the tight victory over Indiana.
