Christian Hackenberg finally put the debate to bed.

Following Saturday’s TaxSlayer Bowl loss, the Penn State quarterback declared for the NFL draft, as did defensive tackle Austin Johnson.

“My family and I just felt like it was best for me,” Hackenberg told reporters after the game. “I felt like my role here at Penn State and my job has been accomplished and it’s in good hands moving forward. And I’m proud of that.”

The announcement came on the heels of Hackenberg getting knocked out of the TaxSlayer Bowl with a shoulder injury. He left the game in the first half and spent the entire second half in sweats on the sidelines.

Penn State coach James Franklin said that the injury was a shoulder sprain and that the x-rays were negative.

Hackenberg’s decision has been well-documented after three roller coaster years at Penn State. Once the future No. 1 overall draft pick as a freshman, Hackenberg’s stock took a hit after two seasons under James Franklin in which he was sacked more than any quarterback in the country.

Still, he’ll leave the program boasting every major passing record in school history.

Johnson, on the other hand, emerged late in his Penn State career. The defensive tackle started every game in the last two seasons and earned second-team All-B1G honors in 2015. His 15.5 tackles for loss was one of the reasons the Lions led FBS in the category.

Johnson figures to be selected in the first three rounds of the NFL draft.

He released a statement on his decision:

“After much thought and consideration with my family, I have decided that the best decision for me is to forgo my senior season at Penn State,” Johnson said. “I want to thank Nittany Nation for your support over the last three years. My love for Nittany Nation will be with me always.

“I want to thank all of the coaches who have helped me throughout my college career. I would like to thank Coach [Joe] Paterno and Coach [Larry] Johnson for opening the door for me to attend Penn State and thank you to Coach [Bill] O’Brien for being the rock of the program in a time of need. I would also like to thank Coach [James] Franklin and Coach [Sean] Spencer for supporting me to excel in my position.

‘Last but not least, my teammates. Thank you for always being there for me. I will carry my pride as a Nittany Lion with me always.”

Penn State wideout Geno Lewis has not made a decision on his NFL future. He told reporters that he’ll have an announcement in the coming days.
